Is ShopGoodwill Legit? What to Know Before You Bid
Last updated: October 19, 2026
Yes, ShopGoodwill is legitimate. It is a real online auction site, created and operated by Goodwill of Orange County, a nonprofit, and it has been running since 1999. The items are real and the sellers are Goodwill organizations. That said, plenty of buyers have complaints, mostly about shipping costs, item condition and returns. This guide covers both sides so you know what to expect.
Disclosure: we make SniperMate, a bidding tool for ShopGoodwill. We're not affiliated with ShopGoodwill or Goodwill.
Who runs ShopGoodwill?
- Operator: Goodwill of Orange County, based in Santa Ana, California.
- Launched: 1999. Goodwill of Orange County describes it as the first e-commerce auction site created, owned and operated by a nonprofit.
- Sellers: ShopGoodwill's Help Center says more than 130 Goodwill organizations from the United States and Canada list and sell items on the site.
- Where the money goes: the site was set up as an additional source of funding for Goodwill's programs, alongside its thrift stores.
Is ShopGoodwill the same as Goodwill?
It's part of the Goodwill network, but it works differently from walking into a store.
| Goodwill store | ShopGoodwill | |
|---|---|---|
| How you buy | Fixed price, in person | Mostly auctions, some Buy It Now |
| Who sells | Your local Goodwill | Goodwill organizations across the US and Canada |
| Can you inspect the item? | Yes | Photos and description only |
| Extra costs | Sales tax | Shipping, handling and sales tax |
| Returns | Varies by local store | Varies by seller, so check the listing |
Each participating Goodwill is an independent organization. It lists its own items, sets its own shipping and handling, and packs its own parcels. That's why your experience can differ a lot from one seller to the next.
Is it safe to buy from ShopGoodwill?
In the sense that matters most, yes: it's a real marketplace, you pay through the site's checkout, and you receive goods from an actual Goodwill. It is not a scam site.
Some sensible precautions still apply:
- Type the address yourself or use a bookmark: shopgoodwill.com. Don't follow links in unexpected emails or messages.
- Use a unique password. ShopGoodwill's own terms advise against reusing your password elsewhere.
- Pay only through the site. Never send money directly to anyone claiming to be a seller.
- Keep records. Save the listing photos and description when you win, in case there's a problem later.
The common complaints
ShopGoodwill's reviews on Trustpilot are mostly negative. Review sites tend to attract unhappy customers more than satisfied ones, so read them as a list of what can go wrong, not as a typical experience. The same themes come up repeatedly:
1. Shipping and handling cost more than expected
Each seller sets its own charges, and handling is billed on top of postage. We explain why, and how to cut the cost, in Why Is ShopGoodwill Shipping So Expensive?
2. Items arrive damaged or poorly packed
Packing quality depends on the individual seller. Fragile items are the usual casualties.
3. Items aren't as expected
Listings are written quickly by staff who are not specialists. "Untested" means nobody checked whether it works. Details are sometimes missed.
4. Returns are limited
There's no single site-wide guarantee that buyers can rely on. Policies depend on the seller and the item.
5. Getting outbid at the last second
Many buyers suspect foul play when they lose in the final seconds. Usually it's another bidder who waited until the end to enter a higher maximum. We explain how this works in Can You Snipe on ShopGoodwill?
6. Account suspensions
Some reviewers report suspensions they didn't understand. ShopGoodwill's terms allow it to suspend bidders who don't pay for items they win.
What ShopGoodwill does well
- Selection. Items from more than 130 Goodwill organizations in one place, including things that never reach a store shelf.
- Real bargains. Staff aren't experts in every category, so valuable items are sometimes listed plainly and sell for less than elsewhere.
- Costs shown up front. Every listing has a shipping tab and a Shipping Calculator, so you can see the total before bidding.
- Ways to save. Combined shipping from the same location, a One-Cent Shipping section, and local pickup at many sellers.
- A good cause. Sales support Goodwill's nonprofit programs.
How to buy safely on ShopGoodwill
- Check the total before bidding. Use the Shipping Calculator on the listing, then add tax.
- Read the whole listing. Every photo, the condition notes, and what is and isn't included.
- Assume "untested" might mean broken. Bid what the item is worth to you if it doesn't work.
- Read the seller's return terms on the listing before you bid, not after.
- Start small. Make your first purchase a low-cost item to see how the process works.
- Bid only what you'll pay. ShopGoodwill's terms say bids are not retractable except in exceptional circumstances, and winners are obligated to complete the purchase.
- Pay on time. ShopGoodwill's shipping guide says payment is due within seven days of the auction closing.
- Inspect on arrival. Photograph the box and the item straight away if anything is wrong, and contact customer service through your account promptly.
Who is ShopGoodwill good for?
A good fit if you:
- Enjoy hunting for unusual or vintage items
- Resell and know your category well
- Are comfortable buying from photos, as-is
- Check shipping before you bid
Probably not for you if you:
- Need a guarantee the item works
- Expect easy returns
- Want fast, cheap delivery
- Are buying something common that's available locally
Frequently asked questions
Is ShopGoodwill legit?
Yes. It's a real auction site operated by Goodwill of Orange County, a nonprofit, and it has been running since 1999.
Is ShopGoodwill part of Goodwill?
Yes. It was created by Goodwill of Orange County, and more than 130 Goodwill organizations sell on it.
Is ShopGoodwill safe?
It's a genuine marketplace with its own checkout. The main risks are the ordinary ones of buying used goods from photos: condition, packing and limited returns.
Why does ShopGoodwill have bad reviews?
Most complaints are about shipping and handling costs, damaged or poorly described items, and limited returns. Experiences vary because each Goodwill location lists and ships its own items.
Can you return items to ShopGoodwill?
It depends on the seller and the item. Read the return terms on the listing before bidding, and don't assume a return will be possible.
Is ShopGoodwill cheaper than eBay?
Sometimes. Winning bids can be lower, but shipping and handling can close the gap. Compare the delivered total, not the bid.
